2 weeks. I won't give them a day more when I leave.

When my company lay off staff, they give zero notice. Why should I give them more than they deserve?

My last 2 changes I ended up with 6-8 weeks notice. In the first it was a contract clause and they held me to the 60 day notice provision. In the second it was complicated, at the company request, and was to try to allow a smooth transition and keep things stable. In both cases it was too long. 4 weeks should be the max. It's hard to navigate having one foot out the door for longer than 4 weeks.

I think two weeks is the minimum especially if you are in a professional or management position. Depending on your role in the company, the size of your department/company (i.e., are there others just like you who can pick up your work, or are you a department of one?), the ease with which someone new can come into the position and do the work you do are all factors to consider. I work for a small company, have been here for a long time and am a department of one, so two weeks notice would put my company in a very bad position - if I left, I'd give at least 4 weeks notice if possible. The other alternative is to give two weeks, but then also make yourself available for a finite amount of time (e.g., 8-16 hours, paid at a rate of $X per hour) for training your replacement or assisting with the transition. No matter how much your current employer sucks, it's always best to leave on a positive note if you can. You never know when you will need their reference or come across your colleagues in another life.

5 weeks because they weren't replacing me and I had a lot of work I wanted (needed?) to finish first.
