We have an offender in our office. I shut his door for him.

I am still going to say...you must not have a lot of voice mail.

Holding the phone listening to voice mail for 20 minutes while writing notes or typing is impossible.

I honestly don't care. People are having a conversation right now outside my door. They have been going over some items that were just shipped in for about 10 minutes.

I can tune it out. I guess I am also the person who doesn't care if people play their music loud. You live in an apartment...that is apartment living. You work in an office where you have people working around you, they are going to talk or be on their phone.

You probably aren't very friendly and up tight.

I only listen to voice mail on speakerphone. I do not talk to people because some people don't like to be on speakerphone.

The people chatting in the aisles or having mini-meetings in their cubes are louder than speakerphone. I really don’t think it’s a big deal. I only find speakerphone annoying if someone is on it all day long. If you don’t want to hear other people – get your own head phones. At least that’s what people in my office do.

P.S. if you're on a conf call, we can't hear you.

I have my own office, too, but I still hear my obnoxious neighbor on speakerphone even with my door closed. Yes, it's a problem that you use it all the time unless you have a soundproof office, which I doubt.

Interesting. Everyone in my office does this. I can only hear people if I am passing by the person's door.

I *hate* coworkers like 17:18. You are not so busy and important that the productivity of everyone within earshot should be affected while you listen to your VM on speakerphone. Speakerphone should be used if there are multiple parties in the room on a call or if you need hands free to edit a document and the person on the other end of the phone is assisting with the editing. Those are the only situations I can think of.

I am a big speaker phone user. I have 20 messages when I get in the AM. I listen and type responses at the same time via email. So for me, unless they give me a headset, I will always use a speaker phone. I know it sucks for you, but you must not have a lot of messages. I don't mind when people do it because I do it. I am on the phone a lot, so I might have 5 messages when I get off of the phone or go to the bathroom. I have to multitask and speakerphone works for me!

When should it be used?

I'm so aggravated by folks using speakerphones to check their voicemail and/or have conversations. WTF do you think everyone wants to hear your conversations and/or voicemails? You're sitting at your desk, not doing anything busy with your hands. Why can't you pick up the phone? Seriously, why?
