Subject: I Think ALL Cities Should Follow San Diego's Lead And Consider This...
You are funny. A pup has an 8-12 week window of socialization. If it hasn't had it by then, it won't get it. How many people post in this forum about aggressive dogs? Or fearful dogs that bite? Dogs that are intolerant of children and other dogs?
A good breeder: not Jim-bob who had pups in the shed, or mister Amish dude with 39 bitches in cages, nor yet some golden doodle breeder with a litter every month-- will socialize the pups, will take the time to properly stimulate them before their eyes open, will have carefully selected the parents for good traits and will stand by their dogs, to the point of paying to have that dog returned to them if something goes wrong. Even if you, the owner, were what went wrong.

Animals cannot speak so us humans must be the voice for them.
The poster who claimed that shelter animals are not brought up well is seriously missing some brain cells. Or didn't complete High School.
That's like saying no one should adopt a child from an orphanage because after living in that type of environment, all orphans are now tainted.

Agility competitor and livestock farmer. That said, I'm entirely in favour of a ban on retail sales of animals. No respectable breeder sells to pet stores. Those are the dogs you find in rescue and shelters, not the beloved offspring of dedicated breeders.

This is comparing apples to oranges. And grapes.
The reason people want their own children is because of the genetic component. No one can be genetically linked to their pet. Not even Snoop Dog. Or Lion. Or whatever.
Anyway, later down the line, if someone has a health issue and needs a bone marrow transplant or something, having a blood relative, ideally your own child can save one's life.
You sound like you only like specific animals.
Like shelter animals are nothing but dirty cast-offs.
This is an uneducated and unfeeling sentiment.
It's because of disgusting folks like you that shelter animals are dying by the hundreds.
No living creature is perfect. If you want a perfect pet, get a stuffed animal.

I don't care if a breeder is reputable or not. The fact that they are responsible for bringing new animals into this world when many many healthy + loveable ones are dying due to no fault of their own is just unforgivable.
If the problem didn't exist and there were not animals in our local shelters sitting on death row, I could see how responsible breeding could be a good option for some.
But our reality is that there is an overabundance of orphaned shelter animals all over the U.S. who's lives are in danger.
These animals need loving and forever homes and many will not get one.
So how is it "responsible" to bring other animals into the world when we are killing off the ones already here??

A breeder is not the same thing as a puppy mill. I understand why people buy from breeders (even though I disagree and wish everyone would adopt rescue and shelter dogs). Reputable breeders who use good breeding practices produce healthy, family-friendly dogs.
Dogs sold in retail stores OTOH are puppy mill dogs. If you google puppy mill you will see some of the horrors of these operations. Allowing the retail sale of these poor creatures perpetuates this horror.
The retail sale of pets (as distinguished from sales by reputable breeders) should be banned.

We are much happier with the dogs we got from a breeder, where we met the parents, got matched with temperaments and generally raised them from pups.
