I'm just curious. Why does it take a gazillion rounds of interviews these days to hire a person?

Ten years ago there used to be just one interview and you were hired. Now it's like a Miss Universe pageant.

+1. My office does this; is very by the book about making sure potential hires meet with EVERYONE they could possibly work with. Sucks if one of those people is out sick that day, but we bring the person back to meet with them anyway. I know it's inconvenient.

This happened to MH recently. Turned out they were having trouble deciding between two candidates and wanted another opinion

This happened to me before. I was asked to meet with the manager of a particular project that they wanted the person in my position to start working more closely with.

It sounds to me like you made a good impression with the higher ups and they maybe are now just checking to see if you fit well with a person you'd be closely working with.

This is sometimes a final step to get your questions answered and sell you on the job or just to see if you'd be a good fit.

Agreed. Do you think it is worth asking the headhunter what this is about or is that inappropriate? Just wish the headhunter had a bit more lay of the land info.

I have been interviewing for a job in a large organization and it has gone well, but there's a new wrinkle. I've interviewed with a headhunter, the department head, the VP of the division and that VP's boss from another city. Everything seemed like it was going well and that a written offer would be on the way (based on the feedback from these multiple rounds of interviews). Well, now, the department head has asked me to interview with someone else in the same department. What does this mean? It seems out of the normal order b/c all the other interviews progressed up the reporting structure. This one seems out of the blue. In addition, I feel like I have had to make up a lot of excuses to leave work at my current job in order to schedule all of these successive rounds of interviews. Any insights or experiences with this type of thing would be helpful.
