+1 or a neurosurgeon. If its chronic back pain, you should get an MRI to make sure there isn't a larger issue. As someone who's been there, I wouldn't mess around with the spine. You can always go to a chiro or PT if it turns out there isn't something more severe going on.

I am not a fan of chiros. I would go to a PT and learn back strengthening exercises. This together with being more careful about lifting helped me. Massages help too.

If you do go to a chiro read up on cracking the back before you give permission for this.

definitely PT. The best thing for back pain is learnin gexercises to stretch adn strengthen your back, abs and other supporting muscles.

Physical therapy is covered by insurance if you go to an orthopedist to diagnose the cause of your pain. The orthopedist will refer you to the PT, who takes the orthopedist's diagnosis and makes a program of exercises/stretches/etc. The orthopedist will usually ask you to make a follow-up appointment so that they can check your progress after you have been to the PT for a number of weeks.

I pay 50% of my chiropractic costs (comes out to $25 per visit), but my physical therapy was covered as long as I had a referral. The cost of getting started with a chiropractor can be high if insurance won't help because you'll have a consultation and X-rays and quite a few visits in the first few weeks. Once you get to the monthly adjustment phase, you probably won't notice the cost of the adjustment. I have a 30 degree curve in my spine from scoliosis and I can promise you it will be worth it. Anytime I start getting frequent migraines, feel stuffed up, stiff in the morning, I go in for a quick adjustment and feel amazing after.

Chiropractor - not sure where you are located but I go to Dr. Ziegler at Rte 50 & Glebe Rd in Arlington - he is great.

It usually is covered by insurance - yes. In some cases, it's a certain # of treatments per year. PT usually is covered if you get a doctor's order for it. Also, often for a specified number of treatments.

Make sure that you go to a chiropractor who takes xrays first, before jumping into treatment.

For me a chiropractor is a short term solution. I've had more long-term results with physical therapy and actually doing the recommended exercises daily or very often.

As pp suggested a chiropractor and physical therapist that work together is best for immediate relief and actually fixing the problem.

Go to a chiropractor. If you can find one who works with a physical therapist that's even better. They'll give you exercises to strengthen the back muscles.

I went to the chiropractor after my second and learned a lot of exercises that help immensely in addition to a series of initial treatments. Do not wait - it made such a difference for me!

I would see a chiropractor or someone who specializes in feldenkrais.

I've pushed it off long enough and now my back hurts daily. What do I do? Go to a chiropractor? Masseuse? Help...am taking pain killer. Never should've carried my twins on my left hip!!
