Here's some more info based on my own experience, as partner to an expectant mom.
Our MFM did the screening with blood and NT and the weighted T21 probability was like 1:2400. And we have twins aboard, so its really significantly lower than that, even. Analysts continue to simply "double" risk when twins are present, but it is more complicated than that. Its more like only 18% higher when properly weighted (Cuckle, J Med Screen 1998;5:3–4).

I asked about Maternit21, and was told that such cell-free DNA tests are good, and work even with twins, but have a higher rate of false positive than the 1:2400 we are dealing with now. So it is more likely that the test itself would yield a false positive than either child actually have the situation which is being screened for.

I was told they don't recommend it, and it would be a waste of money (by my insurance complany) but would be covered. But the statistical argument had me sold already on avoiding it.

Actually I was the PP who wrote that. I go to women to women obgyn in Arlington and was referred because I'm AMA - high risk - (35 yes old) and my Ob gave me an order and I called for an appt. they won't do anything without an order from your Ob.

How did you get into MFM at VHC in 1st trimester? Honest question about logistics. How did you get the early referral?

I didn't have a referral. I just called and set up the blood draw for 10w2d or as soon as I could.

I have my NT at the antenatal center on Monday - my OB sends me there for all sonograms. Can the MFM dr's there order the Maternit21 that day or do I need an order from my OB for them to draw it?

I was told this by her too. Getting it anyway..

Antenatal Testing Center at INOVA Fairfax does it. Don't know what they need in the way of previous tests, doctors' orders, etc.

Greater Washington Maternal and Fetal Medicine, although the genetic counselor seemed to prefer for folks to have it only in cases where the 1st tri screen came back with problematic results. She suggested it was an expensive test and not a good use of medical resources for everyone and their sister to get it just because.

I had it done at Genetics and IVF in Fairfax along with my NT test at 12 weeks.

14:52 - call Sequenom, the most you should have to pay is $300.

^^ They wouldn't help me. I had it done at Maternal Fetal Medicine at Virginia Hospital Center. They just needed an order from my OB.
I did just get an almost $3,000 claim from insurance. So far they haven't covered any of it, and they are requesting more info. I'm 38.

Sequenom can probably give you a list or else help you OB's office get set up for the test.

Where can you get this test done in this area if your OB's office doesn't offer it?
