Never as a kid (grew up in NE). But I see my trashy redneck neighbors here in Virgin-I-A setting them off in the 4th, New Years, etc. any chance they can to blow their fingers off. Maybe it's a Darwin thing.

Were it ONLY a Darwin thing, then there might be an argument to keep them legal.

But lots of innocent kids get hurt with them year after year; the local news even shows firefighters demonstrating just how dangerous these can be and people still go out and get them someohow.

They are really just too dangerous to be allowed for general sale. Something has to be done to protect the public. Thankfully, most blue states have already seen fit to outlaw fireworks; I am sure that's the case in most of Western Europe too - we should learn from them.

Sigh..

Ok, let's play rock gun fireworks.

Rock knocks over fireworks.
Gun beats rock.
Gun beats fireworks.

Game over.

I think the danger with fireworks is NOT that people will use them to intentionally hurt others but that they will accidentally hurt themselves or their property (or neighbors). Don't really understand the need for personal fireworks - just go watch the professional ones.

Yes! I wish they were banned everywhere - independent of the Boston bombing.

Personal pyrotechnics should indeed be banned just for the fire and injury risk they pose when used as fireworks.

Fwiw fireworks were illegal when I grew up outside Boston. I believe that's still the case. I remember my parents stocking up on sparklers etc for our annual 4th of july picnic when we went on vacation in DC...

The bombers bought their materials in NH.

Seriously, why do civilians even have access to fireworks? I don't even like loud noises. Why not ban fireworks? If it saves one child's life, it's worth it.
