Not at all. Two hundred years ago most kids died before adulthood. Not all of the improvement will be due to medicine - most is probably from hygiene, clean water etc. Given this 2/9 seems about right.

I think they didn't pray hard enough.

9 kids...gross. I guess they figured they could afford to lose a couple for their religious beliefs.
