I wouldn't assume the driver tired of waiting and ran over the dog. If the dog was small, it's possible he didn't see it and/or thought the dog cleared his car.

Can't imagine anyone committing this crime and then leisurely driving away (while folks could easily write down his license plate number).

Damn, I just took a dog to the emergency animal hospital last Monday - I tried to coax him into my car, but he darted out on Rt. 50 DC bound traffic in Rosslyn. I was able to stop traffic and get 3 commuters to stop and help carry the dog to my car. The little dog appeared to only have some fractures, but found out the next day he had internal injuries and the owners requested for him to be euthenized. He was so sweet.

If someone hits your parked car, and drives away without leaving a note, I think that's "hit and run". Even if you view the dog as property, I still think there's an obligation to stop.

What about contacting Washington humane society? They have officers to pursue animal cruelty. Thanks for taking the time to help get this creep!

Yes.
It's a dog, a pet...it's a hit in run, the driving is an asshole...who I'm sure would have no problem hitting a person, except it's illegal.

Are you sure the driver didn't just assume the dog was no longer on the road? Maybe it wasn't visible to the driver? I am hoping there's not anyone that would hit a dog on purpose.

Yes, very sad. My husband (and our young child in the backseat) said the dog's owner was across the street frantically flagging cars to stop. They did...until this guy decided to proceed. Apparently the poor woman then ran over to pick up her badly injured dog, then traffic resumed. My husband was directly behind the nasty driver and took a photo of his tags.

My husband witnessed a driver hit a dog this evening in Crestwood, then the guy just drove away. The driver had previously been stopped for the dog so he definitely knew an animal was in the street. He seems to have just tired of waiting and ran over the poor animal. This incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on 16th Street, near Taylor St. The dog was a small terrier, gray and white fur with a red leash. He had run away from his owner, who was a white young woman with dark hair.

My husband got the license plate number of the hit-and-run driver and we'd like to contact the dog's owner, if she is interested in that info. We tried calling 311 but they were not interested in taking a report. Does this sad incident ring a bell with anyone? Anyone recognize the description of the dog and owner, or hear of a friend/neighbor with a badly injured pooch? Or is there someone willing to post this to a Crestwood listserv? We'd like to help.
