Buy a scale and weigh or measure everything. It's a total hassle at first, but this is how you learn what a real portion size looks like. For me it was kind of shocking to see how many portions of X (and how many calories) I normally ate. I got a manual scale at Bed Bath and Beyond for around $15. Digital scales started at around $20 iirc.
That said, I don't bother to log spices. They few times I did it added something ridiculous, like 1 calorie. I generally tend to come in at least a hundred calories under my daily allotment, so I don't worry about it.
