Norman is a decent town for Oklahoma. We have drive through several times.

With that budget, you will be able to purchase a mansion with land and have money left over to live like kings.

I'm from OKC. I would recommend living in Heritage Hills or Mesta Park (near downtown OKC). Norman is a quick 20 minute drive from OKC (a commute I did sometimes twice a day). The downtown neighborhoods are a bit more eclectic than Nichols Hills, which can be snobbish. I'm torn on OKC. I hate the politics, but it's safe, inexpensive and easy to find people who share your same interests and beliefs. There is a pretty big social scene centered on the arts and lots of great restaurants. Schools will depend on where you live. The schools near downtown (Wilson and Classen) are good. I think Norman schools are supposed to be good as well. And there's always private education. You can buy a huge house in the historic neighborhoods for under $500,000, and that's on the high side.

I was born and raised in Norman. Great place to live!! Although PP is right (unless things have changed drastically in the past many years) that racial diversity (other than caucausian and native american) is rare. I would move there in a heartbeat if we had a job offer.

I'd be excited too, truly. But DO make sure your new house has a nice tornado shelter. Seriously.

There's still a lot of old oil money in Oklahoma. Norman is a great town. Your kids will be a lot more competitive for college entry, too, given the geographic diversity they'll offer. We DC types don't like to admit that, but it's true.

Norman itself has good public schools. If you want to live in OKC, Nichols Hills is a lovely area. Heritage Hall and the Casady School are good private schools. There is not a lot of racial/ethnic diversity in the higher economic brackets there, FWIW.

Woah, I dump on flyover country sometimes like the best of DCUM but Norman is a collegetown so it isn't like most flyover towns.

Embrace it OP. I think it'll be a great atmosphere for your kids to grow up in and they won't be held back educationally given that they have access to a research flagship in their town.

Plus they'll get to date all those hot corn-fed pig-tailed girls in hs who aren't stuck up bitches.

I think you can probably buy all of Norman, OK for $900K.

Yuo will get a ton of land for that amount of money.

DH is considering a job in Norman, OK. We would like to spend under $900k on a 5 bedroom house, hopefully with some land. Any suggested areas? What are schools like? Would consider private for our 2 elementary-aged boys.
