Class size fluctuates and follows an individual class. My DS' grade is smaller than the grade ahead, and that has been the same all the way through. If they don't think a child is right for the school, they won't accept him even if they have slots.

We love the school and while I've heard the teachers in the upper school are great and really attentive, the smallness and limited activities (kind of a vicious circle) does concern me. I am hopeful that the new head will address that

To 20:28: The big drop between 11th and 12th doesn't necessarily mean that everyone ran off between those two years. It could mean that there was a class twice as big that followed that particular 12th grade class. Don't get me wrong, people do indeed run for the doors, sometimes in droves, but that carnage more frequently takes place during the middle school years, where the school is particularly weak. By the time the kids are in high school they have either chosen to start there and finish there or they always planned to stay. But the variations in the class sizes generally stem from the middle school class sizes that rise.

Wow does that mean more than half the 11th grade class leaves before senior year.

15:42 again -- the upper school is very small, I was referring to middle school.

The Upper School does not have this number of kids per grade:

Here are the numbers:

Upper School Enrollment
Grade 12 - 20
Grade 11 - 43
Grade 10 - 32
Grade 9 - 27

this is per the school profile

I think its 40 to 50 per grade. I'm a Mclean parent and don't know that to be certain.

McLean is also a school that adds a number of kids over the summer. My dc was there several years ago but the number of girls in the grade doubled from the spring when she was admitted to the fall when school started. Agree with the pps to call the school for accurate info.

I called the school and they told me. Please do that too and not get inaccurate information. There is also a thread on here about the right school for ADHD DD and one of the posters called and gave the information on the 5th grade class size and gender demographics but you really should call PP.

~700 in 7 and 8th at Longfellow (it was ~600- two years ago)
~500 in each class at McLean

I haven't noticed a disparity of gender.

Longfellow is the only feeder MS to McLean, although students in Marshal that want AP can transfer and they usually attend Kilmer. McLean students that want IB transfer to Marshall. More students transfer to McLean than Marshall.

The reason it decreases so much from Longfellow to McLean is the lower grades are just bigger AND Longfellow also has Langley Pyramid AAP, so they go to Langley AND some go to TJ (last year ~70 this year ~50) AND some go private for HS.

Ignore the above post. I forgot I was in the private school forum. I bounce back and forth.

Why not call the school. would seem they would have the most up to date and correct info.

This was buried in a thread on a different topic, so I thought it would be easier to start a new one.

Does anyone (current McLean parent?) have breakdown of number of kids in each year for middle school and high school?

Also, to tack on from the other thread, a gender break down for each grade would also be interesting.
