I once had my DC tax return sent back to me for failure to submit my W2. If anyone in the DC tax office had been competent they would have realized that I didn't report any W2 income so that was why there was no W2 (just 1099 self employed income).

Worst case scenario, as long as they have the right amount of money, is "please re-submit your 1040 with W-2 attached."

I forgot to sign my 1040 one year. They sent back my 1040 and had me sign it. No biggie.

I forgot the W2s one year. We called the IRS helpline and I think the response was "it's okay." It's really stupid that they are "required" as they get all the information electronically. And don't require any 1099s, etc.

Definitely hold onto them. Call the IRS to confirm. But I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

The only thing that should matter is whether you paid them the correct amount, which it sounds like you did. If they actually check your paperwork, they may ask you for them (but as PP said, they should have them linked to your ssn), but penalties are unlikely to kick in unless you underpaid.

I went to mail my check and decided to check once more before licked the envelope. Check wasn't signed...

SMH.

Good to hear. This morning I reviewed the TT instructions that told me to send in a copy of the W-2, so I thought I had made a major mistake. Good to hear it's probably ok. Thanks!

We owed too. We always owe. I never mail in my W2s.

I don't really think this is a big deal. Your employer sends a copy of the W-2 to the IRS too.

We owed too but paid online. We have never submitted W2s as long as we've been using TT but again we pay online.

I'm OP. I did my return on Turbo Tax. I owed. Therefore, Turbo Tax told me I had to mail the return as well as the W-2s. In my haste to get it in the mail, I forgot to attach the W-2s. Believe me, Turbo Tax can't do EVERYTHING for you.

I mailed my completed return and my check to the IRS last week. I just realized that I forgot to attach our two W-2s to the return! Does anyone know how the IRS will handle this? Will they just send me a notice telling me to supply them with the W-2s? Will I be penalized? TIA!
