In addition to pp's advice your contract with the rescue league likely requires you to keep them as inside cats and you are violating it by allowing them to go outside. Your cats are paying the price for your mistake. Learn from it and don't do it again. Cats belong inside. They can get stimulation from toys. Moreover, inside-only cats are cheaper as they need fewer vaccines and no flea prevention.

This always makes me sad. Keep them inside so they live longer or let them go out and risk getting killed by cars, other animals, poisoned, and accident. Both makes me feel like I'm taking something away from their life (although there are flip sides too, like being bored inside and more fun outside).

I had 2 cats many years ago, and one went missing, they were both around a year old. He just never came home one day and it became obvious to me that the other cat was depressed.

We lived in the foothills of the Sierras at the time, so a wild animal probably got to him. My other cat had lots of land to explore, little creatures and bugs to hunt, but it was still sad for him. We waited about a month before we ended up going to get a new kitten to add as a friend. We ended up bringing 2 home, and he took to them just fine, acting like an older brother to the new boy and girl.

It gave him time to be sad, to start to get over not seeing his friend everyday, and then he was happy once he had company again.

Yeah that's rough. Critters do recognize something is terribly wrong, if only because they sense how you feel. I'd give living kitty a little time before getting another.

Having another cat definitely helps. Just remember to ease into their relationship (like over a month. look for how-to-introduce cats tips online).

Spay/neuter them and keep them indoors (we don't let our cats out at all because of car risks).

We had 2cats, we got them separately at the rescue league last year-one as a small kitten, and a few months later the other as an older kitten (so both about one now. Very sadly, one was hit by a car this weekend and he died. We (people) are all very sad as he was truly a gem of a cat. But the remaining cat is kind of being strange and wexarexall pretty sure he is also sad.
They played like no other cats I've ever seen-so cute.
So I am thinking about how sad the remaining cat, and how lonely he is. We are considering getting another cat, so soon for him.
Any experience with this? How can we increase our chances of him having a friendly cat relationship? Thanks very much
