The standard maintenance plan is four years, and BMWs don't fall off a cliff until about 6-7 years in terms of pricey repairs, etc., so if you buy brand new, you should have a relatively worry-free ride. X3 is a good car; I like X5 better. Get the bigger engine.

I didn't like ours. I had a Jetta for yrs without issues but the BMW 3 was a problem from the second yr on.

I'd buy new.

had one for 3 years no problems at all. those were the fun 3 years (pre - kids)

I'd look for some BMW online forums. I'd expect there to be some pretty active ones (might not be the case with every type of car, but lots of BMW owners seem to be active/passionate/car-savvy/whatever). Hope you find some useful information.

Thinking of buying one - not sure whether to buy a 2011 or 2012 with options (under 30k miles) or a very plain, standard brand new one. I'm more worried about how many years you get with it before the repairs start. We would probably sell after 5 years when paid off and buy a new car at that point, no matter whether we buy used or new.
