Well metacognition was the most ridiculous, but it was all somewhat ridiculous, more like a critical theory class than something suitable for a child. I do worry that this is symptomatic of a bigger problem...hope I am wrong. Economics? I am an economist, so I love that shit, but my daughter cannot multiply, so what does it mean?
I will email the jokers on the school board about this.

I have a master's degree (in a science-field) and I have only the vaguest of ideas on the definition of metacognition. My 3rd grader asked. In all honesty, report cards need to be geared to about a 7th grade level for understanding what they mean.

I won't do anything rash, but it does make me wonder about a system where metacognition could be considered a reasonable subject for a 6 year old's report card.

I am not comparing it with the previous report format, what I would like is a report broken down into 3 or 4 meaningful subjects, like reading, math etc. not 39. 39 breakdowns for a first grader? Is that not ridiculous? Civics! Economics!
What does proficient at grade level mean? That the standards have been lowered sufficiently that all shall pass? How about some actual, objective test results in the feedback? Or is that crazy right-wing talk?

PP, how would the previous kindergarten report card (with O, S, and N) have told you these things? In fact, I think that this report card tells you more. If your kid got a P, she's proficient at grade level (how she compares with her peers). And if your kid didn't get a P, she's not proficient at grade level, so maybe that's a subject you need to work on.

I have to admit, I paid no attention to 2.0, since I don't have strong views on educational philosophies or techniques, but bullshit stinks, and after reading the link pp posted on 2.0, it is absolutely clear to me that this is bullshit.
Should I apply to private school next year, or wait till 6th grade? I assume this 2.0 will lead to an exodus over the next few years?

Welcome to 2.0! It supersucks! No comments or helpful info at all....just a bunch of Ps. I had to email my kids teachers for real info.
Ps - under 2.0, kindergarteners didn't get report cards this quarter...had to email that teacher as well to get an update.
It's a good thing MCPS is free, because our children really aren't learning anything. I'll have to supplement a great deal this summer.

Ok, so I don't consider myself an idiot. Good grades from good university etc., but I cannot make head nor tail out of my kid's report card. It is just computer-generated gobbledygook; a bunch of p's and DEM's. I guess maybe it makes life easier for the teacher, but it offers no information of any value to me. How am I meant to interpret it?
Is this the shape of things to come? Must I go private to get some feedback that makes some kind of sense?
