You people really don't give gifts? Not even a cupcake?

Considering the hard work our teacher puts in and how little she makes and is appreciated...I can't imagine not thanking her.

I couldn't disagree with you more. There is zero inherent obligation to give a teacher a gift at the end of the year.

I've never skipped an end of year gift, but I will this year. My DDs teacher has gone WELL out of her way to make her miserable all year. No chance we will give a gift or card.

I don't give a gift if I don't like the teacher. My kid can make a card.

PP, You think that the reason parents give gifts to teachers is to get brownie points and the like? I am a teacher and I will tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. When I receive a present from a family, be it at winter break or the end of the year, I know that the gift is given with the intention to give a give and to show their appreciation for the work that I have done with their child. The teachers in my school receive everything from plants and books to high value gift cards and designer fare. No one cares who gives what and their are no weird feelings.

Gifts to teachers just shock me. I never did it in school and I am young. I feel like parents basically give gifts to teachers to get on their good side and get brownie points for a better grade. Gifts to teachers should not be allowed. Donations to the classroom or school is acceptable.

I'm a K teacher, and I'm surprised parents feel such pressure to give gifts. If you don't want to, don't. I appreciate the gifts my students give, but would never want anyone to feel obligated to give one if they didn't feel like it. There hasn't been a year when EVERY student gave me an end-of-year gift, but I couldn't tell you who the non-givers are.

Child isn't in school yet - but didn't realize you had to get a gift for the teacher at the end of the year. I don't think I ever did that when I was in school (granted that was quite a few years ago).

Our school usually does a class gift so I donate a nominal amount to it if I am not pleased with the teacher that year.

Do you still get a gift for him/her for the end of the year?

I ALWAYS do but am shocked that some people don't.
