Buffalo Trace is a really good option for the price point.

Personally I find Woodford Reserve boring and substandard. Booker's, Blanton's, and Knob Creek are all nice.

I also really like Elijah Craig, which is accessible, good in cocktails, and a bit cheaper. Someone who really likes blended bourbon will probably appreciate it. Someone who is after the name or knows the price may turn their nose up just a bit.

Knob Creek is a nice gift for a bourbon drinker. Blanton's if you really like them.

You could buy a 750ml of Bulleit, Knob Creek, or Woodford Reserve for less than $40. All of them are very fine choices.

No, get a smaller batch bottle or at least Woodford Reserve.

Bookers one of several for people who can appreciate bourbon
If you want to make the statement "I just bought you a nice bottle" to someone incapable of recognizing a name like Bookers, go with Jack Daniels Single Barrel.

I'd like to buy a gift for a bourbon drinker. Can anyone recommend an affordable bottle (<$40) that will still be a nice gift?
