In D.C. the rule is to always wait until April 15th or later.

This year, I would wait. The cherry blossoms aren't even peaked yet!

I don't know about April 9. I've always heard early May to even Mother's Day for DC. This is consistent with what 16:40 said.

PP, your plants are designed for this sort of weather. But tomatoes and peppers aren't!

OP, I think shrubbery will be fine, esp. if you are planting after tonight.

I actually cruised Home Depot this afternoon and was very tempted to buy, but held off as the weather started getting colder while I was standing out there.
Damn this crazy weather!

Just heard that it is supposed to be pretty cold tonight and chance of sleet...I'd wait a bit longer. It's driving me crazy, too! I spent this morning weeding and getting all of my beds cleaned up...ready to add some color and get things growing.

One thing I regret is that I didn't plant poppy seeds in the fall. Now I am wondering with this delayed chill if I would might have some positive results by throwing some seeds down? Anyone ever tried planting poppies this late in the season?

Yes, I think so. I planted a few things last weekend and they are fine.

I've only done pansies. This spring has been so volatile...I think after this weekend (in the 70s!! ) we should be good to go.

Shrubs and bulbs should be okay.

I am anxious to plant some shrubs and bulbs (those that don't overwinter) but don't want to be too hasty. The new virbunum, canna clematis say mid March-mid April. I would assume later is okay, but are you already planting? Not annuals, of course; but besides pansies, have you planted anything this season?

Still rooting for the garden forum.
