I am a director at a non-charitable non profit. Salary is $70K plus $15K bonus, generally.

I'm a director --not an exec director at a small DC nonprofit and make less han 75k. Look for larger orgs. They pay better.

OP here, thanks to everyone for responding. I can't go lower than $75k - or I just won't make the switch. If I could have a more powerful and meaningful impact within communities (including developing and implementing strategies, development, fundraising, etc- all of which I have done in private firms on varying levels) I would much prefer to change my career path.

There's always a sort of a mumble about the low salary when you mention "non profit"... but it's interesting to me, since most architects and licensed planners make well below 90k (and they are lucky if they get a small benefits package). Self-serving design is leaving me feeling less than complete professionally - and being used to working with communities in the past - I greatly miss that piece of it. So I am hoping to somehow find a position which takes the strengths I have developed in project management, overseeing budgets, developing private/public partnerships and turn it into something greater.

It depends on the non-profit. If I remember right, non-profits include things like the Democratic and Republican national committees, the NCAA and the NFL (the league, not the teams). I know some folks in the Washington area working for advocacy non-profits and they earn +$100k.

A charitable non-profit? Or a professional association? Think tank? There are different types of non-profits. The charities tend to be lower on the pay scale.

Also, ASAE does a salary survey and you can purchase the entire report, or just the charts for various positions.

It varies greatly. I've been a director making $34k (at a 5-staff non-profit, several years ago) and I now make $130k at a 100-staff non-profit.

Pull the tax forms off of guidestar for the ones you're considering and the senior staff salaries will be on it.

Director level should be much more than 75k. They aren't volunteers and non-profits need good leadership, not just recent graduates with good intentions.

It obviously depends on the non-profit, but everyone I know who is a director at a non-profit makes at least what you make.

I come from a profession where the pay (despite popular belief) isn't all that great to begin with- architecture/planning. I am looking into transferring to a nonprofit (not within in my profession)... and I have always heard that nonprofits pay less. I guess what I am wondering is... if I'm at 75k/yr now in my profession, but looking to change to a nonprofit at a director level, what can I expect to be the difference in salary and benefits?
