A TH in my old neighborhood (Woodcrest) is for sale - I know the owners really well. If anyone is looking, it is a great little neighborhood of 2 BR TH's.

I did this commute for a few months to downtown. There are commuter bus lots all around Reston that go directly to West Falls Church Metro. From there it's Orange Line all the way in.

So many people are just used to hour long commutes and it doesn't really phase them. Depending on the care situation that you decide on, being accessible may not be as huge a problem as people think. On days when we had doctors appointment or something, I'd work from home so that commute wasn't an issue.

Yes, try to live as close to your work as possible, but affordability and space concerns are factors that concern most everyone. Reston is a great community and relatively affordable yet still with public transportation options into the city if that is what someone chooses. I think most realize that it isn't going to be a 15 minute commute.

We loved our time there and the only reason we aren't still living there is that we weren't able to find a SFH in our price range when we decided it was time to move out of our dinky 2 BR TH.

I think North Reston to DC is tough for anybody. I'm not sure how much support you have from friends/family, but you are not going to be very accessible to your kids with that commute. With the metro opening soon, that will help, but you're probably looking at an hour+ on most days, perhaps longer, depending on the hours you work.

People here are very helpful, give what you are looking for and budget and people can suggest neighborhoods with a better commute. That sounds really tough to me.

we live in north reston and love it. I commute downtown -- i must be crazy, b/c i don't think it's that bad. of course, i rather have no commute, but it's generally an hour, but i've made it in 45 minutes. (public transportation.) (i had a 45 minute commute when i lived in DC and took the bus downtown!)
Kids are always running around. Lots of playgrounds. People walking about. Lots of green.
My son isn't in school yet, but i hear great things about Armstrong and Aldrin ESs.

I second this. I lived in North Point area for almost 8 years and really loved Reston and the surrounding areas. Great place to have kids.

I had a couple single mom neighbors in my TH community, one that worked downtown. It is a tough commute to downtown, but I think it will get slightly easier once the metro is running. For the time being there is still the bus to the metro from several area park and rides (that is how I commuted to Ballston in the years I lived there).

I agree w the one poster: start off by, where do you work. Reston has a lot of pros, a few cons. If you are driving into DC, that is a con.

We live here and love it. Perfect place for mom with kids: we purposely moved here for sense of community a few years back and it's ideal. We constantly see friends and neighbors at NorthPoint or over at RTC. Lake Anne farmers market is great. RCC has tons of activities and classes. My kids are in several sports leagues and Reston Swim is very popular. It's walkable, has tons of parks and pools, Herndon has it's Friday night concerts in the summer, etc.

where do you work? that's a prohibitively long distance from DC proper.

Has anyone lived in North Reston? What is it like as a community? Good/bad place for a single mom? Looking for a nice place to raise 2 children. Would also appreciate feedback on schools in the area.
