We constantly see friends and neighbors at NorthPoint or over at RTC. Lake Anne farmers market is great. RCC has tons of activities and classes. My kids are in several sports leagues and Reston Swim is very popular. It's walkable, has tons of parks and pools, Herndon has it's Friday night concerts in the summer, etc.
I do have a lot of neighbors who work downtown, but I wouldn't do it. DH and I work in Nova.
I second this. I lived in North Point area for almost 8 years and really loved Reston and the surrounding areas. Great place to have kids.
I had a couple single mom neighbors in my TH community, one that worked downtown. It is a tough commute to downtown, but I think it will get slightly easier once the metro is running. For the time being there is still the bus to the metro from several area park and rides (that is how I commuted to Ballston in the years I lived there).
Good luck!
