You are not required to withhold fed and state taxes, only the ss/med. But to do it I found it quite easy. You need to pay the taxes for the state where the nanny lives not works. If that is in a different state than you (e.g. my nanny lives in MD but we in DC) it is a bit more complicated. If you live in the same state you just take care of it when you pay your taxes. We decided to withhold the state under the fed category so she got a refund from the fed and paid the state

Lots of people do it on their own. You payroll companies want to make it sound impossibly difficult.

What horrible advice. It's illegal for one, and it hurts the nanny in the end. Not to mention if you end on bad terms, she basically has your balls in a vice. Take the time to do it legally OP.

Not really. She's also illegally not paying taxes. You both have power.

Please take this question over to 'employer issues' in the nanny forums: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/nanny-forum/forums/list.page

Google Maryland Unemployment Insurance to find out what the requirements are. You will need to get an Employer Identification Number "EIN" from the IRS.

You have to do federal and state. It's too complicated to get into on here. I did it myself just by researching online but it took quite a bit of figuring out to get it all set up. Some people prefer to use an accountant or nanny tax service.

She has been working for me only in 2013, how do I file and pay Maryland's quarterly taxes?
