I think your kid just needs to score 80th %ile on verbal and nonverbal parts of the CogAt. In PG County the TAG designation isn't really "gifted" it is just "advanced".

Kids do NOT need to be early readers to score well on the verbal part of the CogAt but it wouldn't hurt.

For the non verbal part they need to be able to do patterns and puzzles kind of quickly.

I wouldn't try to push a non-advanced kid to do extra well on this test, but if you have a bright child but just fear she'll miss the cut off by a point or two, it wouldn't hurt to do some test prep.

Seems like the kids that perform best on the TAG test are early, fluent readers. Anecdotally, I know children who seemed very bright as K-1st graders b/c their parents crammed learning down their throats. So they did well on the TAG test, then struggled later on in elementary, but they don't really lose their TAG designation.

For the record, lest I sound like a sour grapes type, my kid is TAG identified. I was surprised b/c she doesn't seem particularly talented or gifted. Maybe in another county she wouldn't be in the gifted program. The test isn't that tough I don't think.

In your case I would just prep your child for the TAG test. It's not that hard to score well on.

Does Glenarden Woods have any non-TAG kids anymore? I thought that they turned it into TAG only, no comprehensive. If that is the case I don't think they will do sibling tag along at all, no matter the purchase date of the house. I think sibling status only buys you lottery preference if you also test in (someone correct me if I'm wrong here).

I don't know about Sylvania vs. Kenmoor in terms of which would be the better placement though. We knew a couple of folks who weren't super happy at Kenmoor back when some TAG kids still were zoned to it, but I think that was more related to issues with the TAG program there than the school as a whole.

I have heard that PG is pretty stingy about giving out transfers now. I think you can sometimes get them based on before/after care availability and your work location, but I think it is really really hard to get them now for other reasons. Again, this is all anecdotal though and someone may have current experience with all of this.

I thought OP was concerned that they moved so GWES would be the neighborhood school even if the younger child didn't test in, but now that child would be sent to Judge Sylvania Woods ES based on a boundary change.

I'm confused though as to why the older child would be going to Kenmoor next year. If that child tested in to TAG at GWES and is in 3rd grade this year, won't that child still be there? Or is this a 3rd child (also older) who will be at Kenmoor Middle School so you want the 3 year old in the kinder at Kenmoor Elementary? If you can clarify on details that might help, but I think the poster who said it would have to be a transfer is probably right.

OP, are you saying that your child will go to Sylvan, even if he is in the TAG program? Is Sylvan a TAG school?

I am not sure but i guess it would have to be a transfer. For this year i know the deadline has past i think it was March 23, 2013. Each year they have a transfer deadline. You can say the reason why you want your child to transfer. With all the boundary changes it is really hard to say. I would call or email the principal of the school and this would be the most accurate information. Good luck! i have a child going to kindergarten this year. I hope she will test into Glenarden woods as well by second. For now we are going private until then.

Hello All,

We bought last year close to the school since our 3rd grader was admitted to GWES, and we have a 3 year old we had hoped would be able to attend via proximity,maven if he didn't test-in. I understand the boundaries have changed and he will now be tracked to Sylvan, without the possibility of attending GWES in 2nd grade.

Does anyone know of it's possible to get him into the Kenmore program in K, since his older sister will be there by then? Any other thoughts on how I might make this work? (Besides ensuring he can past the TAG test?)
