I think your kid just needs to score 80th %ile on verbal and nonverbal parts of the CogAt. In PG County the TAG designation isn't really "gifted" it is just "advanced".
Kids do NOT need to be early readers to score well on the verbal part of the CogAt but it wouldn't hurt.
For the non verbal part they need to be able to do patterns and puzzles kind of quickly.
I wouldn't try to push a non-advanced kid to do extra well on this test, but if you have a bright child but just fear she'll miss the cut off by a point or two, it wouldn't hurt to do some test prep.
