For the long-term:

- $225 of food expenses (I think this could be shaved by more careful attention

- $175 housekeeping

- $200 of travel costs (still leaves a bit)

- $400 aftercare by switching schedule

Eat out less.
Stop making Roth IRA contributions.

That would probably do it.

Me too!

I already don't have a car and my kid's in public school. $1000/mo is 30% of my take-home.

Assuming you're talking cash-flow issue, probably:

Cable TV/phone/Internet bundle (save $200). To compensate, I'd get a personal hotspot on my cell plan and use the Internet less. Net savings, about $180.
Try to work from home more to save on gas and parking/transit costs. That would probably save me another $120 a month.
Reduced eating out at work would save me another $100.
Suspend 401K contributions: Plus $500 a month.
Stop buying alcohol, including wine. Plus $200.

I just saved $1,100.

Stop buying lunch out.
Never buy Starbucks or random snacks out.
Minimize food waste by being more proactive about cooking with what's in the fridge.
No more eating out.
Drop landline and cut back on cable.
No shopping (clothes).
Stop doing silly weekend classes for DS.

The car with a car payment: $350

Kids afterschool care (cause if I had to cut $1,000, one of us must be reducing hours/income):$265

Swim Lessons: $210

Cut back on Eating Out: $200

One of the cars
Going out to eat
Cable

I think that would get us to $1000.

I'd probably cancel my cable because DH's sports package is ridiculously expensive. I'd also start bringing lunch to work. I think those two things would do it for me.

Unfortunately, it would have to be my nanny. I could easily save $1000 using full-time daycare. It would be a shame though!

All dining out. I'm sure between going out to dinner, take-out and buying lunches while at work, we spend damn close to that, if not more.
