My older son started getting into that series about 4th grade or so...so if this boy is mature, he might like it.

My 8 year old (I'm a pp who said she got swim goggles for her 8 year old) is less mature, and he is really into the Magic Treehouse series right now.

Another series my older son liked, starting about 4th grade or so, was the "Warriors" Series by Erin Hunter. I know you mentioned that this is through your church, so I would urge you to check out the series a bit first and make sure it's nothing your church would object to. IMO (as a Catholic) it is fine, the cats are Pagan...but I guess some religious groups object to it, so I thought I'd mention that.

yes - for many children living in poverty or homeless (including 14 YO's) they only get things at Christmas. My church does an Easter Basket donation program.
