"Women are naturally helpless to exercise political positions. The natural order and the facts show us that man is the being for politics by excellence; the Scriptures show us that the woman is always the support of the thoughtful man and and doer, but nothing more than that." - Pope Francis (http://www.elpais.cr/frontend/noticia_detalle/1/79169)

Anyone that has respect for an institution that would excommunicate a learned woman for seeking priesthood, but not excommunicate men who rape children, doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. What unbelievably screwed up priorities.

And so are some other churches/sects.

If you're looking for Francis to support, say, married lesbian priests in the short term, you'll probably be disappointed.

If you're hoping to see more transparency and accountability, and a renewed emphasis on Catholic social teaching and service to the poor, then I would be hopeful.

16:32 Can we please be respectful? The Pope is relevant to millions of educated people.

From another thread, "educated person." Hope you're not a woman, at least.

Institutionalized abuse of children is probably the most horrible thing I can conjure besides the institutionalized killing of a race. I cannot understand supporting any organization that was a part of either.

Hear, hear!

He sounds like he'll be an improvement on Curia/institutional reform (that includes child sex abuse) and social justice (i.e. actually giving a fuck about people once they're born.)

Or, at least my hopes are higher than they were with Benedict -- if he can be like John Paul I was shaping up to be or like John XXIII, I will be very pleased.
