...Obviously the calories in pizza will vary tremendously depending on the size, amount of cheese, dough and toppings. I was a bit skeptical when I saw the calories that were posted on some of the menu boards. For example, my local Famiglia pizza shop says 247 calories for a slice (the typical 9 1/2 inch) on the printed menu and 307 calories on the board. Hmmm … So I googled ”calories in pizza” and became even more skeptical when I saw the low numbers. 150 calories for a slice? Doubt it. So I went into dietitian mode and whipped out my food scale. You know what comes next – the dissection! (pic is of me enjoying a personal pizza at Cinema Cafe the day before the Gran Fondo, a 100 mile bike race. I felt as though I needed to gorge a bit!)
Calorie breakdown:
The best way to get a ballpark idea of the calories in pizza is to weigh the cheese and bread separately. You will need a food scale. In general:
- Cheese has 80-100 calories per ounce. Most of the pizza I analyzed was not heavy on the cheese
- Bread has about 80 calories per ounce
- Fatty meat (pepperoni, sausage or fried chicken cutlet) contains 100 – 150 calories when added to a slice
- Sauce tends to be quite low in calories. Most of slices I analyzed contained minimal sauce
