Also I think it's a godo idea to let the local shelters know, b/c people tend to call the shelters if they've lost a pet. They want to know if anyone turned in their pet.

Also, I think you can post on petfinder.com with a description of found pet if the vet doesn't find a chip.

I know our dog used to get out of his collar sometimes which is one of the big reasons we got the chip!

Thanks all! Local vet will scan him for a chip later today. Also I found out I can file a "found dog" report with MC humane society and keep him at my house until owner is found.

I wonder if it's possible to let the shelter know about the dog, let them scan for the chip, take a photo, etc. and then you foster the dog until the owner is found? Maybe there are rules I'm not aware of, but it seems like a win-win.

The simplest and quickest way is to go to any local vet and ask them to scan for a chip.

Call 1 888 HOME AGAIN (1 888 466 3242). That is their found pet number. They are a service that is associated with the chips. If the owner had an account they may be able to help, because they will know if any of their members lost a dog on your area that matches the description.

I don't have the answer, but wonder if you called a local vet would they tell you where to look (no charge).
