OP, disregard PP! Not all DC parents are this petty about clothes. (PP, are you 13 yourself--because you sound like it!) You sound like a great Mom and this thread has some good suggestions on it. Kids do care about this stuff, esp girls, and this could help to smooth over some of the initial break-in phase.

-Anything A&F or Hollister
-EOS lip balm
-Bath and Body Works spray/lotion
-UGG boots
-North Face jackets
-Scarves
-Oversize pullover sweaters (lacy ones are good for warm weather)
-Smartphone
-Bodycon skirts and tanks (for parties)

I agree with smartphones, North Face fleece, UGGS, & skinny jeans.
Hopefully a smart girl who is in a good school and surrounds herself with good friends. My daughter wears UGGS and has a flip phone (no Internet) She is in an elite school and her friends range all over from 2 bdrm apartments to mega mansions and they love just being fun girls. They all dress and look different.
Confidence and friendliness is a huge plus in a girl.
And she is not interested in boys in the slightest yet. Maybe next year in 8th but for now, it is not. Perk for all-girl schools I guess.

I would tell you to make sure she knows its cool to be smart or athletic or artsy or whatever she is. There are all kinds in DC.

Agree with the above poster. DD has a "butter" but not sure how important that really is to her. Be prepared, many girls in the area at public and private have smart phones and are on Instgram.

We are soon to relocate to the area from "far far away" and if there are any small things I can do for DD to ease her way ...
I know it will vary from school to school, but in Montgomery County, grade 8 entry, what would be cool? At her current school for example, it would be A&F sweatshirts and UGG boots. Any hints for the move? We're not prone to spoiling her with things, but this is turning out to be a tough time for her; she's very unhappy about the upcoming move.
