He won't be followed by anyone if his account is set to private. OP mentioned he wanted to follow some game character, not that he wanted to tweet with friends. I think using it as a news feed to follow kid sites is fine. I wouldn't let anyone follow him. So "popularity" isn't even an issue.

I use twitter almost exclusively as a news feed. I will be the dissenting voice and say I think it's fine if 100% supervised at the age. You keep the password. Help him choose who to follow. Make it a protected account. Don't post pics. And regularly check if anyone is requesting to follow him.
If your computer is in a public location in your house, and if you monitor it regularly and choose what he follows, then I agree that twitter is harmless. All this hysteria about child predators is a bit over the top. I use twitter as a newsfeed myself, and never tweet.

My DD begs for a pet pig; it's in no way reasonable, so I say no. Nor would having a Twitter account be reasonable, so just say no to that too. Personally, I hate being asked multiple times for something when I've already given an answer, so I would punish for begging repeatedly, by saying it's been asked and answered, and every time he asks again or makes a passive-aggressive comment about wanting it, he will lose a day of computer use.

I agree with the two PP. The whole twitter lingo is totally confusing to me but I use it exclusively for the news feed as well. I follow friends, some celebrities and news sources. Ive never tweeted myself and I usually only understand 1/2 of what people are tweeting.
I dont see the harm if you set it is private and he only follows kid friendly things. What's the difference between that and people setting up facebook accounts so their kids can play games? I actually think twitter is the lesser of the two evils.

I feel the same way as the PP. Of all social media I think twitter is the lesser evil. I also use it daily as a news feed. I have never posted a twit but check it 3-4 a day just to keep us with news, articles, recipes, etc.
Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me easy to control and I am sure he would lose interest pretty quickly.

Once he starts there is no way to put the genie back in the bottle. Even if other 2nd graders do it kids at that age just don't have the judgement that makes someting like that a good idea- not to mention all the weirdos and creeps having access to your child.
The Disney marketing department is genius and does a great job of making kids feel like they HAVE to have something. Online gaming communities are a great way for people with perverse intentions to have access to a huge number of children. You don't want your son to be one of them. Just say no to this one- and tell hime when he will be old enough. Does he have access to the internet?
