I am on several kids contact lists since I am SAHM, and when I work it's fairly flexible. So network at the pool, neighborhood email list, library hour to find moms who might be an option both as contacts and before care.

I am going to do a double check. I am so used to do everything. Dad travels a lot. Seems like many of my neighbors are commuting like me. But let me double check.

Isn't there someone else who can pick her up in an emergency? I have zero family in the area but four neighbors who would drop everything to go and pick up a sick kid.

Sounds like OP did but her school's before care doesn't start early enough.

Schools have before and after care. Look into that.

I know PG kids who have had transfers based on childcare but it's the discretion of the principle. So find childcare, and then approach that principle. In practice, I wonder if it's easier to get if you seem like a low-maintenance family and your child is not special needs. They might not approve you until late in the game in summer once they see what their own enrollment looks like. So you probably need to register at your home school first.

Contact the PTA too, they might know someone in your neighborhood who could do your before care in their home and then get your child on the bus. Going to your local orientation might help figure that out, too.

Think about if it is worth her not going to public school with the kds in her neighborhood. We ended up getting a morning nanny because I wanted my son to see his classmates in the neighborhood, on his sports teams, and in the community. Are you going to shlep her to a birthday party or playdate that is 30 minutes away on the weekend?

I only have experience with MCPS, but ask for the change of school assignment (or whatever it's called there) form anyway and examine the options listed. In MCPS, those reasons are listed along with a generic "hardship" option that requires a detailed explanation (such as child care, proximity to your after care provider, etc). Whoever you spoke with may be attempting to dissuade you from applying for the change (can you blame them?) but I would want to see the form before deciding it is impossible.

You should be able to take care of it before the school year starts. In MCPS, at least, I think the deadline to apply for a change for the fall is sometime in April. If your daughter is going to K this fall, I'd get moving on it ASAP. If you get to change, you'll likely go to K orientation in the new school.

In MoCo, you can get a different school assignment based on child care needs, if the school you request is not overcrowded. Have you asked about that scenario?

My daughter is going to kindergarten next year. I must say i am being selfish but i need a pg county public school closer to washington DC where i work in order for me to drop her off for before care and make it to work on time. I was told they only transfer if you have a sibling, you are moving or a victim of a crime. Does anyone have any experience in not sending their child to boundary school and transfering the child for other reasons.
