If your DC is in public school and taking the AP class for which she will take the test they will probably spend time on AP test prep in the 2+ weeks or so before the test. You should also get the AP prep book for that class. There are places that do AP test prep sessions in late April/early May - Potomac Prep is one. If you are in private school and DC is just taking the test and it's not an AP class she probably needs to do more prep to be familiar with the questions/format of each test. Depending on how many AP tests she is taking there is a limit to how much prep they can do and keep up with school work (again this is easier in public school where the last couple of weeks are geared towards test prep.). In 9th and 10th grades my DC only had one AP test so prep wasn't that big a deal. It's harder when you've got 4-5+ AP tests to take.

SAT2s are similar. You can do practice tests and tutoring at Prep Matters and other SAT tutoring places. But getting the prep books and self prepping may be enough depending on the subject and the timing of the tests. English and Math prep wont be that different than the SATs so that prep will transfer over (Math 2 may require a bit more outside prep than Math 1). US History and the sciences are good after you've taken the APs in those and spend time with the prep books since some of the questions will be different. If you are trying to do them all in 10th grade that may require quite a bit more prep since you probably haven't started SAT tutoring yet and your DC may not have taken AP sciences yet. At my DCs school the 10th graders mostly took US History if they had taken AP US that year, and Math 2 if they were in AP Calc already. Most of the kids taking subject tests took them in 11th grade after they had done SAT prep and had taken more advanced classes in math and sciences.

This is a follow up question to the post on SAT subject tests from the OP of that thread. Thanks for the helpful responses. For those whose sons or daughters have taken SAT subject tests and AP tests, how much if any prep did they do outside of their coursework? My DC cannot fathom that more is required than maintaining A averages in the classes, but the college counselor and teachers recommend outside prep. They have not been clear how much, however. Does this mean taking one or two practice tests before the exams, or actually working through an entire review book between now and the exams? If closer to the latter, did your student set a schedule for him or herself to get through the mateirial? I want to give DC good advice but don't want DC wasting time on unnecessary test prep. DC is only in 10th grade and I am afraid of burn out (taking some tests this year instead of next because those are the courses DC took) TIA.
