OP here, thanks for the tips and the heads up about them taking a year to get established.

Our strawberries were way too sour in both years one and two. I don't know if we'll let them grow this year... they just end up being dog snacks.

We got ours at HD. They take a year to get established. Last year, the second year was amazing - we had tons. I've also read that they only have about 4 year life cycle so we'll rip them out when they stop producing and replant.

I think you should grow jalapeƱo peppers in the summer, too. You will get an awesome yield and will be able to give them to neighbors.

Yes - interesting about the pennies. Thanks!

Thanks for the penny tip PP.

I'll check out home depot. My goal is just to encourage my son, learn a bit about planting/gardening, and hopefully just get something to grow. If it isn't obvious, I have never planted a thing in my life, so even if we just get a few strawberries, it will be a success.

I got everbearing strawberries at either Lowe's or HD 2 years ago and they're taking over my beds. Granted, each plant only produces a few berries at a time, so I'm never going to have tons at once for shortcake or whatever, but they produced until frost. It's more a regular hunt for berries and enough to drop in some yogurt or just eat off the bush. Very sweet and tangy berries, and I've been sharing plants with friends.

Whatever you wind up doing, put some pennies or other copper around the plants to keep slugs away.

Oh - thanks PP, that makes things easy. I thought strawberry planting season started in March though?

My son would like to grow something and after doing a bit of research it seems strawberries may be a good choice. Can someone please recommend a good place for a novice planter go to and get supplies and strawberry plants in/near Arlington, VA? Thanks!
