How about technical/scientific writing?

OP here. Thanks for the advice and info on S & T fellowships....Will definitely look into that.

Hey OP: I posted up thread and just got this in the mail. PP mentioned figuring out a way to become a fellow. I would suggest finding some in DC and asking for info interviews. That's how I started. I info interviewed about a dozen (that's how unhappy I was in my postdoc). And I got the gig! It's a great network for future job searching forever. My boss was a fellow in 81. I was in 2000-ish.

SOme FFs (former fellows) are on the hill, in the white house, doing policy work for non-profits, ect.

Take the patent bar or go be a patent examiner.

Have you looked into foundations that fund in the lifesciences?

+1. I doubled my pre-fellowship salary within 2 years of starting the fellowship. Unfortunately you'll have to wait as the cycle just closed in december, but it gives you time to network and figure out a way in (it helps to know what they're looking for, and "unemployed and want to earn more money" is not it).

My husband has a hard science PhD but currently writes computer models for a gov't contractor (the work is being done for a regulatory agency). Next fall, he begins his MS in computer science.

OP, have you looked into jobs at the nat'l academy of science/institute of medicine? They require science phds of all their senior staff, even tbough the work seems to be coordination, not hard research.

Phd scientist and jobless. Seriously considering a career change to something that can help me pay bills....any advice?
