Old wives tales that may have some truth to them, who knows.

My mom told me to avoid papaya and I looked it up - apparently unripe papaya contains some sort of latex that can cause contractions. Ripe papaya is just fine though.

As for pineapple, I've never heard you shouldn't eat it during pregnancy, but i have heard that eating a lot of pineapple can help put you into labor in late pregnancy.

That said, I have not avoided either fruit!

If you are not insulin resistant, pre-diabetic, or a diabetic, there is no reason for you to know or care anything about this. Chill out, people.

11:04 - I have absolutely never heard of something like that! If something is going to cause a sugar spike, then eating a protein with it will have little to no effect. Where did you get something like this???????

Wow-- those are among limited food items that I can eat (or even just think of) without wanting to hurl. Wonder what women in the tropics did for millennia. I can't imagine they all avoided these two fruits, especially since both contain so many vitamins. Hopefully it just comes down to everything in moderation.

I think it isn't an issue for most women at all, but those working on a glycemic index diet would be aware of these issues (like I said, my mom is diabetic so I'm aware of these things....she spikes if she eats pineapple, especially alone). I try to eat more sugary fruits with a protein - I LOVE pineapple and cottage cheese, and CC is a great source of protein for me.

I wouldn't worry about this at all unless your doctor specifically mentioned sugar/glycemic index food issues to you...you'd probably have issues before pregnancy with these things as it is.

Pineapple and papaya both have very active enzymes in them, but I don't imagine they should cause any trouble - they are usually helpful in breaking down food. And keeping Jell-O from setting if you put them fresh in Jell-O...

I never heard that--I love pineapple and ate a ton until third-trimester heartburn kicked in.

yes, but some have a higher sugar content and raise you blood sugar mroe than others (apples are better than pineapple, for example). But this is really for the insulin issues that some PCOS patients have. My mom is diabetic and she is supposed to limit certain higher-sugar fruits.

Aren't all fruits high in sugar?

I've heard that if you have PCOS, the fruits higher in sugar should be avoided because they can cause a blood sugar spike. That's all I've ever heard about it.

No. I ate both throughout both of [healthy] pregnancies.

Searched google of course and read opposing views. Anyone here avoids these fruits?
