I'm surprised the sodium benzonate and potassium sorbate didn't keep it fresh.

I dug it up because I was trying to find references to "My Kirkland Grapefruit cups exploded in my pantry". Now I have a huge mess to clean up

What made you dig up a 3 year old thread?

With all of those additives I think you'd be fine. I'd be more concerned about the additives.

I did the same thing, but didn't realize my mistake until several of them exploded in my cabinet. So I wouldn't eat them based on that.

I do refrigerate mine, because the label says to, but I've alway wondered why. The mandarin segments that I get in similar containers last months without refrigeration. Maybe they have preservatives that the grapefruit doesn't? I've never bothered to check.

I'd eat them, well I wouldn't because I hate grapefruit, but otherwise no hesitation.

I bought a 12 pack of Kirklands red grapefruit cups at Costco yesterday, immediately forgetting that I got them from the refrigerated section of the store. They have been sitting in my kitchen unrefrigerated for about 20 hours now, and I just remembered that they need to be refrigerated (says so on the packaging). Ingredients are red grapefruit segments, reconstituted white grape juice, citric acid, ascorbic acid, sodium benzonate and potassium sorbate. Am assuming that the grape juice is why this must be refrigerated...should still be ok after 20 hours, yes?
