All of them could, it is all in how you train the dog and reinforce his behavior. Dogs naturally have a prey drive, but how high it is depends on the dog.

OP, have you contacted the local shelter? They can usually tell you which of their animals get along with other types of pets. Actual observation is probably superior to assumptions based on breed in this case. Breed is not guarantee.

OP, get a mutt on the young side that is not a mix of breeds known to hunt and kill "vermin." Yes, some terriers are fine with cats, but many many many aren't, for example.

So since you're starting from scratch and you have no limits, don't go with the "kill small prey / kill vermin / chase small prey " breeds: Greyhound, big terriers, pit bulls, big hunting hounds, etc.

I LOVE big terriers and there are 2 wimpy Pits in my extended family. But if I had any breed to choose from at the pound when I was starting out, I would gravitate toward something else rather than risk it.

It's the dog, not the breed. We had a German Shepherd that killed cats, if he got the chance.

always have had german shepherd and shepherd mutts with cats. it has less to do with the breed and more to do with conducting a proper introduction between the two pets. also, the younger the animals the easier it is to get them used to each other. there is tons of info that you can get on web searches on proper introductions. good luck!

Our great pyrenees loves our cat.

Our Havanese loves our cat so much I think the cat could use some personal space sometimes.

We also looked at getting a Miniature Schnauzer because they are good with cats, typically.

Although others may have terriers who do very well with cats, terriers are a tossup. You can probably find one at a shelter that has been with cats already, though. Since you have the cat already, it may go better than gettng a new cat, but you should keep in mind your cat's personality. If your cat is alpha, try to get a dog that's more submissive than the cat.

He was just a happy go lucky dog. So cute! Like Toto on the Wizard of Oz! My coworker also had a Cocker Spaniel who managed with her cat.

We have a 10 year old cat who is a good guy. He has been around our family's dog (extended fam who come) and has been fine. What breeds work well with cats and kids (6 and 9). We would live to get a mutt, but we worry about behaviors with our kids and cats. Any suggestions? Thx
