If you move mid-school year, your child can be granted a COSA and you can finish out the school year at school #1. But the next year, you'll need to be at school #2 in your cluster.

In PG the principal has some discretion to approve an out of boundary for after school care, for instance. Divorced families have told me that their child can go to school on either parents address, not just the custodial parent. Don't know if either could apply to you...

I would think, that once you share it with families for playdates, birthday invites etc... that it will get back to the school and your child may be asked to leave and sign up at their new neighborhood school unless you attempted a COSA. I would imagine you will be seen as playing the system which is not looked upon nicely around here.

We get our child's bus assignment, teacher assignment, room assignment, and mailings regarding "incidents" at school via mail. Every year we update a form with names of parents, contact persons, addresses, etc. -- also mailed.

My understanding is that MCPS often allows COSA's for kids who are close to graduating their current school. So, I had a friend who moved mid 4th grade and their child was allowed to finish 5th, but not to matriculate to MS with his elementary classmates. However, I don't think they'd let most first graders stay unless you have a compelling story.
Not the pp but first kid is only in K. I can't recall anything coming in the mail from MCPS most communication is done via a folder that is sent home periodically. Parents/PTA, etc. communicate via email. Invitations for birthday partys have either come electronically or they were directly delivered to DC and carried home in the back pack. Report was hand carried home. I'm not sure how mailings to the home can be an issue unless this varies per school and/or changes once kids become older.

If you do a forward address at the post office when you move - it is likely MCPS would be informed of the address change.

I would imagine you have to inform the school or you would not be receive report cards b/c they would go to the old address.

no. you can usually finish out a year but otherwise need to go to the school you are zoned for. You can apply for a COSA and could have a shot if the school is not over capacity (many of the desirable schools are over capacity).

We're thinking about renting a new place for a year or so starting when DS starts kindergarden and then buying a house. If the initial rental and the new house are both in MoCo, can DS continue to go to the elementary school that we were in bounds for initially? Thanks!
