The federal government works in storage ways. If an agency doesn't fill an empty position, it may lose it for good even if the sequester is repealed. Most would rather spread the pain around to current employees than risk that.

Yes it's possible. Vacancies still exist and you'd be amazed the tricks HR has up its sleeve.

I know agencies are still hiring. But I would be a little concerned about being recently hired in this economic climate. Maybe I'm just super cautious though.

Our agency is still hiring for select (i.e. high priority) positions. If the vacany is posted, I would assume it's for real.

With sequestration/furloughs looming, I just got an interview for a position with an agency. Is it possible they could actually hire someone new, or is it just a matter of keeping the process going with no intent to hire? This is a job I was/am really excited about but I just don’t get how it’s realistic.
