NCAA allows up to 12.2 scholarships for a men's lacrosse team. Teams routinely have more than 30 members so a many players get no money and most who do get some get fraction of a scholarship. Ivies don't give athletic grants and many other schools don't have the financial resources to fund scholarships in lax (and several other sports). If you are good at lax you may be able to use it to leverage up your opportunity to get into a school that might otherwise be a stretch.

Club lax is big and very competitive and offered at a very large number of schools. Michigan recently upgraded its club program to D-I after years of being one of the top club programs in the U.S.

The most important thing is getting to the right school for your kid, not which lax program. Attrition rates among players--both good and marginal--can be quite high. You need to ask yourself, if there was not lax, would I still want to be here?

But to truthfully respond to your post, OP, it has been THE very hot sport at colleges in the NE/mid-Atlantic for some time, in part because suburban white kids have been shut out of college recruiting for sports like basketball and football. The rest of the country is catching on and following suit. It helps that it's a great sport. But really, what's fueling the interest of these crazy lax parents you see screaming at the U-9 club games on weekends is the secret hope that lax will be the bump that gets their kid admitted to the likes of Princeton, Duke, Cornell, Hopkins, and all those other great schools with competitive lax programs.

My son plays u9 for a VA club team. I'm sure we "scream" at some of the games -- adrenaline, you know. We don't look at is as having anything to do with college. They are 9 after all. That said, there are plenty of nutso parents who clearly think this is their path to a good college and they scream like crazy and act horribly. Yes, Bethesda Lacrosse dads, I'm talking about you.

She rows because she loves it, but the scholarship money will certainly be nice.

I'm the PP that mentioned crew & fencing. Can you elaborate on the ROTC scholarship? DC will be doing ROTC for 4 years in HS.

Other posters are correct. You can look at the NCAA website to see how many scholarships are allowed at the DI level for male and female sports.

My DD was an Ivy rowing recruit. If you have a girl -- the best ticket to an Ivy is rowing recruitment (even better than legacy status). If you have a boy -- look at lax, ice hockey, basketball, football, and if they are really, really good at soccer -- then soccer.

Oh, sailing is good too and so is squash. Most of the best squash recruits hail from other countries. If you can play squash...great.

I think soccer and softball are better options for most girls. And field hockey.

ANY sport that your child excels in will help them get into a good college. Why quick a sport that us über saturated like lacrosse? Seems counterproductive.

there are scholarships but they will not be a 4 year free ride. Typically, there is a certain amount allocated to the team and they dole it out by the number of players. Football, basketball and D1 hockey are more likely for 4 year scholarships. The appeal about lacrosse is that the schools that are d1 are very good academic schools (Ivy league, Duke, UVA, Johns Hopkins etc) that are hard to get into. Lacrosse provides a hook.
