It also depends on age:

Building museum has free field trips for title one schools and nominal fee if they are not

The nature center in rock creek park is pretty cool for younger kids and the planaterium is neat

In md there is a very cool nature center in patuxent river

Ford's theater has a pretty interesting presentation on Lincoln

Aviation museum in College Park is only $3

Smithsonians obviously
