I love Pain Quotidien too, but the Bethesda location is nearest to me and I can't stand to park in that part of Bethesda now that the big parking lot is gone.

There is one just over the DC line in spring valley with easy parking if you are so inclined. We live in Bethesda and that one is actually closer to us.

Oh thanks. That is a little further away but actually more convenient than the Woodmont Triangle (kind of like the Bermuda Triangle these days haha).

I like Spring Mill as well - love that pesto bread - and the wholegrain/7grain is so soft with a crunchy crust (makes great sandwich bread).
Ha ha, agree re: LA comment - at least they certainly don't do the best bagels

Used to get it from Atwaters at the farmers market, but they shut the closest one down.

Can't imagine that bread from LA is the best around.

There is only one real bread here:
LaBrea - and you can buy it at Harris Teeter, and sometimes other locations.
There might be some good small bakers here and there, but the vastness of bread in our country is bad, very bad, no flavor, no consistency 'sponge bread'.
The LaBrea bakery is in L.A. Read their story.
They really "get" bread. Disclaimer: unfortunately I am not affiliated with them in any shape or form.

Title did not say WHERE you want to buy.

I live in s. Arlington and we like Best Buns in Shirlington. Also some of the breads available at Harris Teeter.

Spring Mill is good, although for dinner I prefer whole wheat sourdough from Le Pain Quotidien. Spring Mill has really fantastic coffee cake, sweet rolls, apple/cinnamon breads for lunches though.... And ok, I take it back, they have a great pesto bread I would use for dinner.
