Full-time attorney. Maybe it is different in other professions but I have never seen a woman continue part-time who was not either completely disregarded in terms of professional credibility or was actually working full-time for part-time pay. I do have a lot of control over my schedule, which helps. If I didn't, it would be very difficult to juggle.

Full time. I need the money and I don't have the opportunity to work part time in my field anyway. (at least not yet.) I would do it if I could though.

Just giving hope to OP.....in my world I know a doctor, admn assistant, technical writer, teacher, accountant, and project manager all of whom work part- time with an employer ( so not self- employed) and have done so for years. Me included!

I also work 2 days at home.

That sounds like a great schedule.

It is. I feel really lucky. I took a paycut when I came to this agency from another, but I knew the flexibility would be worth it. It is certainly not the most exciting job in the world, but there is always work to be done and the people are generally great - especially bc I only see them twice a week.

I work 32 hours a week (up from 24) and love it. I would prefer 24, but there is just too much for for that right now (and we could use the money). I enjoy having the extra time with the kids. I work for a small company.

I work full-time technically but at an incredibly flexible job (took a big pay cut to come here, from corporate to a non-profit). I basically work 9-5 but can take any appointment, etc during the day without a thought. I work from home on Fridays and, aside from maybe one Friday a month that's crazy, basically work a half day those days.

I work full time. I had a part time job with the Fed but it was so unfullfilling so I quit for something else. While working partime I was taking one day off a week, so we still had to pay for full time daycare which was a stretch for us financially on my part time pay.

I work part-time - 30hrs/wk, in the office one day and the rest from home. For me, working PT is ideal. My job is very fulfilling, I don't think I'm cut out to be a SAH mom, and we need the money - but I have that extra time to spend with my kids, and the work week is that much less stressful for everyone. My kids and i have leisurely mornings together before preschool drop off and time in the afternoon to run errands, prep dinner, or do something fun.

That said, we take a big financial hit due to my PT schedule - not just bc I work fewer hours, but because I'm wedded to a organization that pays poorly. It's a trade off we are willing to make now, and one that I will probably continue to make through the ES and MS years since I can really see the value in being home when the kids get done with school. I'm lucky that while my job pays poorly, they make up for it with their flexibility. I've continued to move up the ladder despite my PT schedule and even those at the top often telecommute or work a reduced schedule. I think that can be hard to find.

I've thought about looking for a new job, but figure I'll probably have to put in my time as a full timer before I can push for a PT schedule somewhere new. For the right job, I'd do it, especially if PT was a possibility for the future - but given the benefits of my current position, I'm most likely staying put for awhile. It's been my experience that its much easier to negotiate a PT schedule when you've already proved your worth than to find a new PT gig.

I work full time because the job I have requires it, and I'm okay with that.

I work-part time as an education researcher. I think it is ideal in that I can be intellectually stimulated by my work yet still have the flexibility to be with my kids after school. However, I recognize it is a luxury that may not be an option for everyone.

So many moms on DCUM seem to have these wonderful flexible part-time schedules. I work full time and have a preschooler DD. I'm wondering if I should look for a job that gives me more flexibility to go part-time...... I'm kind of okay with the full-time thing, but I do wonder if I'm missing out or will later regret not spending more time with DS.

I'm curious how many moms on here actually work part-time. Or are there a lot of you working full-time?

If you work full-time, is it for the money? Because you like your job and want to be there full-time? Or you don't have the flexibility to work part-time?

Thanks!
