+1

We went to Edinburgh for two nights after a week in London and it was the highlight of our trip. Wish we had spent more time there instead. We went on the train and it was so easy. Loved it!

You could do an overnight trip to Brussels. Amazing city for a day or two. Indulge in chocolates and waffles.

One thing my family did which I’ve never known anyone to do is to do a “skip the line” tour of Stonehenge. These tours enable you to walk into the stones! The tours are either before or after the park closes (had to get up at 4 am). Our tour also had breakfast in a quaint little town and also went to Bath. The Bath trip was also a skip the line tour into the baths which was nice because the line was long. Although I’m not a real bus tour fan, the trip was limited to 14 people (which made it better for me), and this day trip was definately worth it.

York is less than two hours by train and lovely if you are looking for history but want fewer tourists than Oxford or Bath. If you actually want to live in a castle, this is your best bet http://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/
Don't go to Dover unless you are catching a ferry to France.
Have fun, Dan (a londoner moving to DC)

Stonehenge is a must go spot, then go to Bath. They are not too far apart.

York is a bit far, wherever you go ,go by train, Bath is nice and so is Windsor, you will be so exhausted you will not want to travel so far North and so far South. Last trip I hired a car at heathrow and drove to the West coast of wales, the drive took me 3 hours. It was spectacular.

I second the Oxford or Cambridge suggestions. Cambridge is smaller and slightly more picturesque.

If you just want countryside, Kent or Sussex have some beautiful countryside.

York is also very nice for a 2 day trip.

Leigh-on-Sea. Quiet, quaint, beautiful. Ruins of a castle.

Family headed to London this Spring. While we plan to spend a majority of our vacation exploring the city we are interested in a quick jaunt outside the city to the country. Any recommendations for a quick 1 or 2 night stay? Has anyone stayed overnight in a castle?
