I asked what breed you have. I use to have a golden and she hated crates. I rarely took her to the groomer I did it myself. But when I did I told them she didn't like crates. In fact two places use to leave her out in the grooming area to walk about. Normally she slept somewhere or just watched. I'd call around and tell your concerns some places will work with you.

This link is to a vet/groomer/boarder in Great Falls. There are private areas with beds, a pool, etc and maybe you can get this for the dog:

Call ChiChi's in Georgetown. I used to joke that they fed my dog crack. She's obsessed with that place. I think she loves ChiChi more than me .

They cost a fortune, and may be inconvenient for you, but if you're concerned about your dog's treatment while in the care of a groomer, they're worth every penny.

I'm trying out muddy mutts in Arlington for the first time this week. I don't believe they crate the dogs. He's a nervous mess,so we'll see how it goes.

Why do groomers crate dogs for hours and hours when we've made an appointment? It's happened at 2 different places (one chain, one mom and pop). I guess it must be the norm, but i hate it. Her "crate" at home is our tiny kitchen, where's she's confined at night and any time we aren't at home. She's not used to an actual crate, and has a particularly hard time with all the other unfamiliar dogs barking around her. Last time I picked her up she peed and pooped as soon as she saw me, and drank 3 bowls of water when we got home. Should I use a mobile groomer? Any recs?
