I plan to, plus when I told him what I earn, I was saying what my salary is, not what I actually earn with bonuses and overtime. He truly IS a real mensch, and I am confident he will pay me a fair salary that I am happy with (that will be more than what I was making before).

So, when you meet with him, even though he knows what you make, you may want to make a pitch for more money, given the additional risk you'll be taking with a start-up company.

OP here - it's probably not a big deal, but it means a lot to me and I am nervous and excited. Perhaps you may know from experience that sometimes when something is a big deal to you, you lose the ability to see it clearly even though you can see another person's issue crystal clear. So I asked for advice. Isn't that exactly what this forum is for?

I agree with PP. If he is a friend there is no need for any more formality. Meet with him when he gets back and nail out the details.

Shit I shoulda said I made more

I have been in loose talks with a colleague-turned-friend about working with/for him if he struck out on his own. We were about to do it, when his office space fell through and he decided to just stay where he was. He had approached me about this, not the other way around. About a month after the office space debacle, he found new office space and is signing a lease for office space (I am friendly with the leasing manager and am positive this is a done deal - they are both stand-up people). He has gone on vacation for a week, but emailed me a job description saying "Hey there, while waiting for my connection at JFK, drafted up a quick job description for discussion for when we're able to speak. Have a great weekend."

He hasn't offered the job to anyone else, and hasn't posted an ad looking for anyone else. He asked me what I'm earning a couple months back and when I told him and asked if that's in his range/budget he said yes, and that he'd actually thought I was earning significantly more. I'm pretty sure the job is mine if I want it, which I do.

How do I respond to his email in a way that shows I am enthusiastic and definitely interested, yet not being presumptuous? I don't want to seem obnoxious by assuming I've got the job. Based on the job description I think it'll be a lot of work, and some things I haven't done before, but that I could do it, and do it well. I want this. How do I convey that in a nice way that strikes the right balance?
