Our kids have been a separate floor (above) since they started sleeping through the night. I would be a little more nervous about having them on the ground floor (not sure why exactly) but the separation has not been a problem at all. We use video monitors.

We have our child on the 1st floor, us and second child upstairs. It wasn't our 'perfect' scenario but we are making due with the space we have. It does work nice since the kids can play in the room downstairs but in my dream house, we will all be on the same floor!

My mom was freaked out more about it than we were- we are a staircase away and once she realized that in her large home with us all in separate bedrooms the distance is farther away she backed off. Growing up in a 6 bedroom home, my brothers were on the floor above us since they were the loud ones!

If my house were configured like yours I'd move our bedroom to the main level and have both kids upstairs (keeping the baby down with us until they could transition into their own room). I just wouldn't feel comfortable with one child downstairs by themselves.

Our master is on the ground floor and our kids' rooms are upstairs. My oldest was 4 when we moved in and we've had two more kids since then. Babies stayed in our room until about 6 months and after that we continue to use the baby monitor; my youngest is almost 2.5. I did do a lot of up and down the stairs during the night but it really wasn't that big a deal.

Yes, your first child might not have nightmares. My daughter very rarely does. Is the second bedroom upstairs big enough to put both kids in it? You don't really need to have anything in there but beds- you could do beds with storage drawers underneath for clothes and maybe put everything else in the closet?

We're having issues right now because we have 2 bedrooms upstairs and 2 downstairs. right now my bedroom and my daughter's are both upstairs. Due to a storm that sent a tree through her window last summer, she is now scared to sleep in her room, but I do *NOT* want to move her downstairs. (we have a guest room downstairs and a room we rent out. not ideal to move either of those upstairs.)

It's not a definite that your child will have nightmares like you did.

We wanted to buy a house with 2 kid rooms upstairs and our master room on main floor. I lost a lot of sleep wondering how our 2 year old was going to handle being upstairs by himself. Waste of time because he was totally fine. I was shocked. Just do not make a big deal of it. It is probably harder on the parents than it is on the kids.

we actually kept the toddler on our floor and baby is in the attic room. She was in our room through night wakings/feedings, but she is a much better sleeper than our toddler, so we kept it this way and its been fine. I have a good monitor, and one floor is not too far to go to get to her, if needed. By contrast, our toddler both wakes at night and also would freak out if he wandered out of his room but was all alone, so we kept him near us. When the baby is a bit older and the two are on the same schedule, they will share a room and I will get my attic office back.

Our home is configured so that the master bedroom and nursery are on the 2nd floor and two additional bedrooms are on the 1st floor. When my 1st child turns 18months we will be expecting our 2nd child. As a result, our plan is to move our first child's bedroom downstairs. Having my child on another floor from me makes me alittle uneasy. As a young child, I remember suffering from nightmares and frequently running into my parents room in the middle of the night. I'm worried that as my 1st child begins to have nightmares that it may bother her being so far away from us.

Can anyone share their experience with a similar situation?
