She should have her get started tlaking to shelters NOW. They may not have space right away. She should try to line something up asap.

Although I agree with the no CL's posters, I will say that it's not as easy as you think to give your dog to a rescue.

My friend tried to give her boxer to 3 different rescues when she deployed and they wouldn't take him. I don't know why, but I do know he was a well-behaved dog. She finally did give him to someone on Craigslist and it worked out well.

I've had nothing but shepherds/shepherd mixes since I was a kid, still had the same breed after I had kids and now my kids are over 21 & I have grandkids, lol, never had a problem with a shepherd ever

I wouldn't recommend someone with kids adopting this combo. of a dog. I've known shepards to attack kids, incl. myself as a kid.

This reply is judgmental, but really, don't do Craigslist. There are some urban legends about animals obtained via Craigslist being used for target practice or as bait animals for dogfighting, but there is some truth to it. Additionally, you really have no idea who is taking the dog if you choose someone from Craigslist. A "real" owner would be looking at rescues and shelters for their new dog, with the reputation Craigslist has.

No kill shelters include Lucky Dog, Lost Dog, HART, Friends of Homeless Animals. Look on petfinder for more in your area. A dog like you described will likley be a very attractive pet.

If she cannot find a home I would take the dog to the Loudoun County Shelter. Those dogs fly out of the shelter. I tried adopting from there, but the dogs get grabbed up so fast, it was too much of a hassle. I don't think they get many animals through there, or else the community is very supportive in adopting dogs, not sure.

The shelter is also very clean and nice. Better than most boarding places I've seen.

Geeze, judgemental much?

Maybe she got laid off and has to move out of her apartment suddenly. Maybe she is living with an abusive spouse, maybe she's been looking for an affordable place to live and finally found one, but it doesn't take pets. Maybe she just got her dream job overseas. Maybe she's in the miltary. Maybe she's been trying for quite a while to place her pet with someone, and now is desperate.

Lots of people find themselves suddenly in situations where they can't keep their pets. That doesn't make them bad pet owners. Life is uncertain and throws you unexpected curve balls.

Luckily, there are nice people who want to adopt pets from people who can't keep them.

I'd call the rescue organizations. They usually place pets in foster homes and make an aggressive effort to find families for nice animals.
