Personally, I think that play therapy for a kid with chronic behavioral issues is of questionable utility. It's good for a young child who has experienced a traumatic event, e.g., divorce of parents, etc---but not for a kid who doesn't really think their behavior is a problem.

I would look to find a therapist who will work with both of you together--after all---you are with them all the time vs. a one hour a week therapy session. The therapist can help you in terms of finding better ways to respond to your kid's behavior in a way that will effectuate change. I have an extremely challenging adopted child and have joint therapy to be extremely helpful for me in terms of dealing with her.

Can you ask the person providing play therapy? My 6 year old is also smart and verbal, but doesnt have anywhere near the emotional vocabulary to benefit from talk therapy. Of course, she also has AS, so perhaps an NT 6 yr old would be able to do this.

DC has behavioral/self reg issues, also emerging anxiety/depression. Feel like play therapy isn't helping. At 5, my child is verbal, smart, can be manipulative at times. When would I switch? Feel we aren't getting anywhere...
