I always plant snap peas the weekend after Valentines's Day and they do great. Mine got in the ground during the beautiful day yesterday.

I'll start lettuce and Swiss chard indoors this weekend and transplant them in about a month.

Love the lasagna method. It really works wonders!

I'm going to hold off on the early veggies until mid-March. Until then I am going to get out there and prepare two of the raised beds that didn't do so well last year.

I'm going to prepare them lasagna style; with newspapers, soil, and organic material like coffee grounds and egg shells. Hopefully they will have more nutrients and less weeds and pests than last year.

In late Feb or early march you can do peas. A couple weeks after that you can do lettuce, turnips, kale, collards.

Peas. Put string peas in the ground in February in DC.

Stick a chicken wire fence in the ground along the row (unlike in this pic so they won't flop around and be eaten by slugs. Pick them early to have tender fresh "snap peas"

I know you said outside, not in - but you can start seeding things now if you keep them indoors. Then transplant them outside when they get to a certain size and when it gets warmer. My husband grew most of his tomato and pepper seeds from seed last year.

Our frost date is 4/15. I often cheat and plant early - just keep an eye on the forecast and you can always put a blanet over your tender plants if it looks like it's going to be below freezing.
Good luck! I'm itchy to get started too.

Lettuce, carrots, and spinach maybe in a few weeks. They will grow as long as it does not go below about 30 at night. I have done it. If it goes below 28 small plants will die. Last frost is about the first week of May. No warm weather plants.

I"m in NoVa. or soon?
any type of lettuce? spinach? Outside, not inside. I kill all indoor plants.

If not now, how early can i start and what?

In the past I"ve always planted mid-May but want an earlier start this year...even if just on some things. Thanks
